T Minus 1 Day: YIKES!

27 Jul

It is Monday morning at 9am, and I’m sitting in my pjs liesurely getting ready to pick up Mom from the airport. It’s so nice to not be at work!

My last day at work was wonderful. I worked like a dog from 7am to noon finishing everything up, then our entire staff went on a catamaran ride on Lake Tahoe. It was a wonderful way to start my leave. The day couldn’t have been more perfect, we had a blast, and I even got in a quick dip at the Hyatt Beach.

Saturday, I nested. It was serious. I did 6 loads of laundry, sterilized stuff for the baby, cleaned the windows in our house, and worked myself ragged until I took a long nap. I didn’t go outside until 7pm.

Sunday, I lived it up one last day. To the pool with friends in the morning, back for a nap, to the pool with family, then up to Sand Harbor for JB’s early birthday celebration of a picnic, one final dip in the Lake for me, and a Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival show. It was a lovely evening.

Today, I pick up Mom, we’re going to lunch, and then doing a spa day. Can’t wait!

Surgery is scheduled for noon tomorrow. Will post updated here ASAP, but I’m giving you fair warning… JB isn’t one to update this blog (I tried to get him to last time I gave birth), so it may be a few days!

T Minus 29 Days: The Belly As Canvas

29 Jun

Holy smokes, less than 30 days! I spent a wonderful weekend with the in-laws, where I got to relax a bit, but also got some help with baby preparations from my mother-in-law.

Anyway, last Thursday, I bought Little Miss some face paints, as she has been doing face painting at her day care, and LOVES it. We get home, and she was excited to paint her Momma. She started with my arm, moved to my leg, did a bit on my face, and then I could see the gears turrning in her head, as she asked, “Can I paint The Belly?”

You should have seen her light up when I said, “yes”. I lifted my shirt, and she was thrilled with the large canvas that awaited. I had to save the masterpiece to show her Dad when he got home. Anyway, here is a pic. I think she had the most fun poking the brush into my belly button!

Father’s Day In Pictures

22 Jun

We celebrated Father’s Day by going to see a concert on the beach in Tahoe City. Even though it was a bit cool, it was a memorable, perfect evening. We danced, Little Miss played, and we all had a lovely time. Here are a few pics:

They had hula hoops at the concert, and we all three gave it a try. JB was remarkably good at hula hooping. I had difficulties due to my current roundness — it just slid right down!

I mentioned a few weeks ago that Little Miss and I had a photography session with Michele at MMB Photography back in April.  Here are some of my favorite pictures that she captured of Little Miss.  She was being a bit difficult that day, but I bribed Little Miss with a lollipop afterwards to keep her focused on following directions.  If you live in Reno, Michele is a very talented photographer!

Mom and Daughter Photo Shoot

18 May

About a month ago, I stumbled upon a listing at Reno Moms Like Me for a photographer in Reno looking to expand her portfolio for maternity and young children.  I met up with Michele from MMB Photography at Rancho San Rafael on a lovely Spring day.  Everything was in bloom, and we had a great time wandering the grounds with her to find good shots.

When she uploaded the shots she took of Little Miss and I, I was floored.  I expected to get a few good shots, but almost every one was beautiful.  She truly has an amazing eye, and her photography skills almost seemed poetic to me.  I’ll be featuring some of the pics she captured on this site for the next month.  In the mean time, if anyone in the Reno area is looking for a good photographer, Michele is your woman!  Go check out her site and look at the Maternity and Babies and Children galleries to see more of our photos featured.

Thanks, Michele, for capturing a very special time between a mother, a daughter, and an expectant son.

I Even Left A Little Water In the Pool When I Was Done

29 Apr

Last night was the Reno Corporate Challenge Swim Meet, an annual event where we gather a team of people to compete against other local companies.  This was my sixth annual swim meet in this competition (I missed one year as I was recovering from giving birth), and we had a pretty good turn out for our team.  Most people thought I was a bit batty to be competing at 6.5 months pregnant.

And perhaps I am, but I’ve been swimming lately, and feeling really strong.  This is my one chance to swim in a swim meet each year, and I really didn’t want to sit it out (especially after sitting out most of ski season).  I talked to my doctor, who said to go for it, and that I did.  I expected a lot of stares from strangers as I loaded my pregnant belly up onto the blocks, but there was so much commotion that I don’t think anyone gave me a second thought, besides probably thinking “good for the chubby girl to get out there and compete”.

But my coworkers knew, and they were proud.  After finishing one race, I heard one of them yell, “yeah, baby maker!”

I think I also wanted to prove that a pregnant woman doesn’t have to sit at home in a bubble, but can actually get out there and hold her own.  I’m sick of reading on the pregnancy sites about women who think a stroll around the block is exercise, and that lifting 3 pound weights is strength training.  I personally believe that as long as you don’t have complications, you should get out there and challenge yourself almost every day — belly or not.  Yes, the belly is starting to slow me down, but I know that myself and my baby are stronger for my mentality.

Yes, it was humbling to be out there in my swim suit with all those other girls that looked like they just stepped out of their college team’s practice for the race.  I was thankful that our company provided company logo robes for us to wear in between races.  Because believe me, I didn’t want to be prancing around in my Speedo in front of my coworkers any more than necessary.

I walked away with a third place in the back stroke and second place in the breast stroke.  Not bad for hefting an additional 14 pounds through the water!  The relay competition was heated, and we came in fourth (ouch), after sweeping the relays at last year’s event.

That said, here are the pictures my coworkers captured of me last night.

Here is my back stroke wall start…  I didn’t even attempt to get myself up onto the blocks with my knees all curled up for a proper start.

And the next pic initially made me cringe.  But right as I was about to delete it, I thought that I should keep it, as it is the only pic that shows what the belly looked like that night.  The whole night I thought I just looked really chunky, but seeing the side profile makes me think — hey, I might actually look pregnant finally!

6 Month Belly Shot

22 Apr

OK, I’ve been slacking on belly shots and posting in general.  I hit 6 months on Easter Sunday, but never managed to document The Belly for 6 months…  Anyway, on our camping trip to Bodega Bay (beach of NorCal) this past weekend, my brother took this picture documenting the shirt he gave me last time I was pregnant.  Doesn’t show the belly all that well, but makes for a few funny pictures!

We got off to a rough start camping…  Starting with what we refer to the Bad Tax Situation (reference only my in-laws will get), as we were supposed to leave Thursday morning for camping, but got a “friendly” email from the IRS stating our tax return was rejected due to my birthday being incorrect.  After a long an unproductive call to the social security administration and 1.5 hours spent waiting at their office, it was determined that 5 years ago someone typed in my birthday wrong when I changed my name to my married name.  Evidently it took 5 years for the IRS to synch with the SSA to catch it, preventing our taxes from being filed on time.  I can’t tell you how LIVID I was that we had to delay our vacation because of their mistake.

Anyway, we swung by the post office to mail our taxes with the corrected documentation, and were off to Bodega Bay.  We arrived at 9:30 at night, where it was pretty flipping cold and windy.  In fact, the wind on Friday was so impressive (and admittedly miserable in our tent trailer — my brother in his hard side was happy as a clam) that we called up a friend that lived 45 minutes away to pursue “Plan B”, which included visiting Petaluma.

Of course, while we were packing up the camper, the weather turned GORGEOUS, but Plan B was already set in motion.  Saturday morning, Little Miss and I biked along the beach, and then JB and I both went for runs on the beach (I discovered I CAN still jog at 6 months prego — woo!  The pace is slow, but jogging nonetheless), cleaned up, and abandoned the gorgeous beach weather to head inland. JB mandated that I change out of the above pictured shirt before seeing his friend, and we were on our way.

I must say, though, that I absolutely LOVE Petaluma.  It is one of my favorite cities to visit, as it is just as charming as can be.  We walked around downtown, Little Miss made friends with our friends’ 4 year old daughter, and JB got to visit with a friend he has known since kindergarten.  Oh, and they have some of the best gelato I’ve ever tasted in Petaluma.

All in all, a very good weekend, despite Uncle Sam’s efforts to stifle it.  Oh, and try explaining to a 3 year old why the camping trip is delayed…

Me:  I have to go see some people so that we can pay Uncle Sam.

Little Miss:  Who is Uncle Sam?

Me:  A not so nice man who wants our money.

Little Miss: Where are you going?

Me:  To the Waiting Place (a reference to Dr. Seuss that I found perfect to describe the Social Security Administration)

Here is my first Belly shot at 21 weeks (5 months pregnant).  There is a reason you haven’t seen any pictures of the “bump” for the past 4 months…  I’m just not a cute pregnant woman.  I expand in all directions, and don’t really get a bump.  I get a spare tire and a bigger pot belly, and eventually (I think around 7 months), the two will join to form a rather gargantuan bump.  If you can call it a bump.  Perhaps we should just call it the bulge.

Anyway, I had my 5 month appointment today.  The doctor asks me “how are you feeling?”, and all I could say was “huge”.  He actually said my 8 pound weight gain was relatively low, which I guess is a good thing.  In my grand delusions, I’d like to just gain 15 pounds total, but considering I’m entering the rapid growth phase now, I’m afraid that is completely out of the picture.

According to BabyCenter, my baby is the size of a carrot (What’s Up, Doc?!), and is 10.5 inches long.  So yeah, I guess there is reason for my pooch.  I’ve been feeling a lot of movement lately, which is reassuring, yet still freaky at the same time.  It’s just strange to have a completely separate being living inside of you.  I doubt I’ll ever get used to that.

I had the in-laws in town this weekend, and we took Little Miss out to fly a kite and on her first ferris wheel ride.  She had a ball, and has been soaking up all of the attention.  Pics posted on my Flickr site.

I Nailed the Snappy Casual

4 Feb

I finally got a chance to upload some pics.  Here are a few from the company “Winter Celebration”, which I mentioned before had a Snappy Casual dress code.

Looking at this first pic, perhaps I do look a bit pregnant.  I did have to dig into the maternity wardrobe for snappy casual, as none of my regular clothes fit that description.

Evidently JB liked the outfit.

Blog-vacation Over

2 Jan

Well, hello there. Anyone still reading this? Sorry for the silence. I guess a summary post is called for…

On Christmas Eve, Little Miss and I did the final grocery shopping and errands in preparation for my in-laws’ arrival. JB, Little Miss and I went to church at 6. That day, we had purchased The Grinch That Stole Christmas (the classic version), and JB made the mistake of telling Little Miss right before church started that we’d go home and watch the Grinch after church. She then decided she wanted to leave RIGHT THEN, and when the congregation was quiet, she said loudly, “I WANT TO WATCH THE GINCH” (ginch is how she pronounces it). They had a cute pageant, and the Mary and Joseph actors sat right in front of us. At one point, Mary turned around and handed the Baby Jesus baby doll to Little Miss, which had her floored that she was holding BABY JESUS!!!

The in-laws showed at the airport without a hitch, right as a huge storm arrived. We had a crazy white Christmas with almost a foot of snow at our house. It snowed all Christmas Day, and was lovely. Growing up in New Mexico, this was a true novelty to me. Little Miss got a doll house from Santa. She had asked for a castle, and I specifically chose a doll house because I didn’t want to encourage the princess thing… Ha! She immediately called the doll house a castle, and got multiple princess barbies for Christmas, so the princess thing is rampant in our house. Oh well, the kid is happy.

She got a baby doll that she promptly named Baby Jesus. When asked what her favorite gift was for Christmas, she said, “Baby Jesus!” Highly appropriate if you ask me.  She also got a dress, which she changed into immediately.  She then had to twirl in her dress with every present she received.  How did I, the former Tom Boy, end up with such a girly girl?!

little-miss-new-dress

The day after Christmas, JB and I went out to enjoy the 2 feet of new snow at Kirkwood. The powder was awesome. On our way there, we had to make a pit stop at the coldest outhouse ever. Seriously. Look.

outhouse

We had to tromp through four feet of snow to get to it, and the door was snowed open, and snow was piled up inside.  But it was a truly needed stop!!!

On Saturday, I went snow shoeing with my sister-in-law, CB.  We had a lovely time, and even though it was foggy, we saw a great sunset.  It was a treat for a girl from New York City.

snowshoeing-with-cb

That night, my parents came over, and it was the first time since our wedding 4 years ago that my parents had been in the same room as JB’s parents.  It was a good reunion, and free entertainment was provided by my two nieces and Little Miss.

parents-reunited

On Sunday, we did a scenic drive to Lake Tahoe, but I didn’t take any pictures.  Monday, we did a late Christmas celebration of sorts with my parents and brother’s family.  It was an extra treat to get to see my parents.  Otherwise, this week has been quiet.  We had a horribly dull, adult New Years, where we stayed in and I read a book while JB researched how to use his new espresso maker online.  We spent New Year’s Day lounging at home.  Original plans were to go skiing, but we were just tired and were a bit spoiled by multiple powder days lately.  So, we lounged in pjs until about noon, and then I took Little Miss to the park.  Last night we went out for sushi (yum), and now, here I am, one of the lone soldiers in the office on Friday.

I hope you all had lovely holidays as well.

Small Boat Advisory

20 Nov

Back in October, my brother and hubby did the Xterra Triathlon up at North Lake Tahoe.  The day of the race, the water was so rough that all small boats were ordered off the lake and the swim part of the triathlon was cancelled.  I just remembered that I never posted the below pics, which show that when there is a small boat advisory on Lake Tahoe THEY ARE SO NOT KIDDING.

October-November Pics

Sorry I’ve been slacking.  Only excuse is I don’t have much to say…

Took Little Miss to the grocery store tonight, where she turned into poltergeist child and started throwing a fit, which included chucking a can of green beans out of the cart and screaming at me, “NO I WILL NOT STOP YELLING AT YOU.”  I went through the store doing my best to ignore her tantrum and the looks of bystandards, and when we got in line at the checkout as a last resort, I asked her, “do you need a hug?”

She did.  Tantrum over.  Had no idea this one would be so easy to stop.

(And to you people out there without children:  if someone gets in the line behind you to pay at the grocery store with a child having a melt down, PLEASE let them go ahead of you.  I wanted to strangle the lady ahead of me that didn’t show that courtesy, and then held up the express lane for 5 minutes with a price check.)

Here are the pics I promised:

Second Best Day of Work EVER

16 Oct

I’m back from spending yesterday at the Squaw Valley Ropes Course.  It was AWESOME.  So awesome that I’ll call it my second best day of work, as the first best day was our ski day at Squaw a few years back.

Anyhow, we were split into groups, and my group decided I’d be the first person to climb.  We were harnessed in, and then a man offered to be my belay…  He was a tiny man who was LITERALLY FROM ETHIOPIA.  I told him, “I’m sorry, but I really don’t want to make you fly when I try to rapel down.”  He argued with me, saying he was sure he weighed more than me, and I had to be adament…  I didn’t want to be the person that made the Ethiopian launch 5 feet off the ground!

Anyway, I did four of the courses..  The first one was a wire bridge, which was really easy.  The next one was a climb up a 200 foot (at least) tree.  It was like my childhood fantasies come true.  I was so happy to keep climbing and climbing, and then you ring a bell when you reach the top.  Another fun one was climbing up a telephone pole, then standing on top and jumping to catch a trapeze.  The standing on the telephone pole got me so worked up with adrenaline that my hands got sweaty and I fell right off that trapeze when I caught it.

So here are my pictures.  Wow.  So cool.  I’m totally taking people up there next summer with me!

(I used the multiple upload tool in WordPress, and it evidently didn’t like two of my pics, and then doesn’t provide a way for me to delete them…  Sorry for the broken images below.  Each picture can be expanded if you click on them.)

Race for the Cure

8 Oct

My parents are in town visiting, so we’ve been busy spending quality time with them and my brother’s family.  On Sunday, Mom, Little Miss and I did the Race for the Cure in honor of my Aunt, who is a survivor of breast cancer.  It was a beautiful morning, and it was so special having three generations participating in honor of my aunt.  I actually did the 5K run, which was very challenging because there were like 5 gazillion hills on the course, and when I finished, I turned around and walked back to meet my Mom, daughter, and co-workers.  I got to walk a little over a mile with them.

Anyway, here is the pic.  Pink power!!!

Here are some pictures I took back in September.  I tried to add captions, but evidently Slide.com doesn’t work on IE8, and the Compatibility View is disabled, so until that gets figured out, no captions for you!
