Hello, Internets. I haven’t forgotten about you. I’m on vacation in New Mexico. We flew in on Friday, and JB and I skiied at Taos Sunday and Tuesday (area was closed Monday due to a storm), he returned Tuesday night (in a marathon travel day) and now Little Miss and I are hanging with the Grandparents for the rest of the week. I’ll update soon. Promise.
I’m in Seattle today. Ironically, when I left Reno, it was cloudy and here in Seattle, it’s completely clear skies. The weekend went well, but remarkably fast. I spent Saturday doing laundry, cleaning, hanging with Madelynn, going to the park and a side trip to Wally World. I was amazed to see how high my calorie burn was (via the Body Bugg) that day. I burned just as much as a day when I go to the office and work out really hard at lunch. Hmmm…. One more arguement in favor of being a stay at home mom!
On Sunday, I got a half day of skiing in at Mt. Rose right as a storm was blowing in, and the wind was wholly impressive. The Body Bugg claimed I burned 980 calories in 2 hours of skiing, which I’m not sure I believe. I figure half of that time is spent on a chair lift, so I’m wondering if all of those bumps runs wigged this contraption out a bit.
Little Miss has a new game she likes to play. She’ll go to a hiding place and announce, “I’m hiding”, and then she expects me to come find her. When I do (as she beckons to me so that her hiding place is painfully obvious), she acts extremely surprised. She’ll then go hide again. In the same spot. And she wants to play this game over and over and over and over. After I’ve found her in the SAME spot about 20 times, it tends to get a bit old.
She is also developing some bad sleep habits. I’ve been rocking her to sleep for quite a while now, and usually I can rock her for a few minutes and place her in her crib where she’ll roll over and sleep for about 11 hours. But this week, as soon as I get up from rocking her, she clings to me and screams “Rock!!! Rock!!!” So then I go back and start the process over again. After about an hour last night, I determined I’d just let her cry herself to sleep, but 20 minutes later, she was still standing in her crib screaming her lungs out. The only way I’ve been able to get her to sleep the past two nights is to lay down with her on the bed in the guest room, and once she’s asleep, I’m scared to move her after all that effort, so she has spent the past two nights in a queen sized bed, which doesn’t seem to phase her. Any of you Moms have suggestions for me? I’m thinking I’ll have to set a limit on the rocking and try to let her cry it out, but she is proving to be rather stubborn.

P.S. I’m curious to see how many calories I burn in a day-trip to Seattle for work. I walked over 2,000 steps in airports just this morning!
I’m in Day 3 of the great BodyBugg challenge. I have to admit this thing is really geeking me out. I can’t stop logging into the website to update my calorie burn by synching, entering my food intake and monitoring my calorie burn. Weight loss has never been so tangible. For the first time in my life, I feel like I know exactly what I need to do. (Let’s hope this works and that my balloon just doesn’t get deflated by my old lady metabolism).

So you can see I burned over 3,000 calories and consumed 1709 calories, leaving a deficit of 1349. I guess I went a bit extreme on the cutting back, but I’ve lost 3 pounds since Wednesday…. That man (the founder) stays in the same position. I think he should do a little cheer or dance every once in a while…
For physical activity, you can see my Box Jump workout that I did from 1-2pm, and then the other spikes are me just running around doing every day things with Little Miss or around the house/office. This thing also works as a pedometer, and I took over 12,000 steps yesterday (with a goal of 10,000).
Here is a sample chart of the food analysis you get. My fat was a bit high because I think I overestimated the amount of avocado I ate with my salad, and instead of building a custom recipe to analyze the chicken tortilla soup I made, I just selected the default calories from the Boston Market chicken tortilla soup. I sure know I made it a lot leaner than they do.
So as you can see, I think I’ll be able to really monitor my calorie intake and exercise to make a difference, as I’ve been in a plateau ever since I lost the baby weight. More later.

The Nanny Diaries by Emma Mclaughlin – This was one of those cheap thrills chick lit reads, which I got through very quickly, and the best thing I got out of this book was that it made me feel better about myself as a working mother. It was fascinating to read about the rich women in NYC that don’t work, but hire full time nannies so that they can go to the country club, spa, shopping and plan excessive parties. I also learned a discipline trick that works like a charm on Little Miss. It was referenced as something like “Good Witch/Bad Witch”. The idea is that when a child is being good, you talk to them like Glenda the Good Witch — high pitched and super sugary. When they do something wrong, you turn into the Wicked Witch of the West, using a low, imposing voice. As soon as the child corrects the behavior, you snap back into being Glenda the Good Witch. Works like a charm with a toddler — go ahead, try it.
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert — I read this one while on our Mexican cruise, and it was highly enjoyable. After divorcing her husband in her early thirties, the author goes on a year long trip of recovery in three stops: Rome, for pleasure (mostly gluttonous, with a special emphasis on gelato); an ashram outside of Mumbai, for spiritual searching; and Bali, for “balancing.” I enjoyed the part about Italy the most, as it brought back lovely memories from our honeymoon. It was interesting to read about her spiritual journey, but what this book did for me was make me feel remarkably normal. While reading about her having a panic attack on the floor of her bathroom when she realizes that she married the wrong man and doesn’t want children, I felt a calm, as I’ve had similar strong feelings telling me that I married the right man and that I was meant to be a mother (and those feelings didn’t require a panic attack). It made me slightly more interested in meditation, but not enough so to actually meditate myself. Anyway, I highly recommend this book.
Why Moms are Weird by Pamela Ribon – This is another chick lit light read, but I devoured it in less than a week. Pamela Ribon is a writer for the new show Samantha Who?, and I’ve been reading her blog, Pamie.com, for a while. I also read her first book, Why Girls are Weird when it first came out (a fun read about how a girl’s blog lets her create a sort of alternate reality). Anyhow, this book wasn’t at all what I expected (kind of thought it would be from a Mom’s point of view), but it was a light hearted read with good bits of humor. And I’m proud to report to Pamela that the writer’s strike has driven me away from the TV and back into books (on her blog, she said the best way to support the writers was to not watch the reality shows currently filling the space for the shows currently off air due to the strike).
Goodness. I’ve had all kinds of things to say on this blog, but have found myself running around like a chicken with its head cut off lately. So the big news around here is that I’m bugged.
Literally. I am now the proud owner of a BodyBugg, which is a device you wear on your arm to track your calorie burn each day. You then synch it to the BodyBugg website, where you also keep track of your food intake, and the program helps you manage your ideal calorie deficit to meet your weight loss goals. I’ve been wearing this thing for about 24 hours now, and I have to admit the data I’m getting from it is so intruiguing, and I really like having such tangible goals for calorie burn and intake each day. It’s fascinating to look at the chart showing how many calories I burn throughout the day (shown by the minute). I can’t wait to wear this during my workout today to see what it says. I’ll post a sample chart once I get a full day of data on this thing.
So far, it has been a bit annoying to have this thing strapped to me, and it really bugged me (ha!) as I tried to sleep last night (yes, you’re supposed to wear it at ALL times except when you shower). But I think it will be worth it.
If you’ve watched America’s Biggest Loser lately, you’ll know that the recent contestants are wearing BodyBuggs. I think there really is something to this thing, but will keep you posted on my progress.
So if you see me, now you know why my right arm looks extra fat! I have to admit I feel like I’m participating in a science experiment. I also am initiating a social experiment — how long can I wear this thing before my husband notices it?
I’ve managed to take a lot of time recently to read, and wanted to share with you my thoughts on the three books I’ve finished recently.
1. Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez. This book was billed by Oprah as the “greatest love story ever”. I’m a sucker for a good love story, so I bought the book, and was disappointed to find it was really more of a story of a rather disturbing man who remains obsessed with a woman for over 50 years, and deals with his obsession by having sex with countless women and even a child. I found it more creepy than romantic, and I had to fight my way through the book more than I would like.
2. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Housseini. I received this book from my Mom for my birthday, and have to say it was a truly splendid read. I was sucked in right away, and learned a lot about Afghanistan and the Taliban. I found it fascinating to read from the perspective of a woman in such a male dominated and oppressive culture. I gasped out loud when a c-section was performed on a woman without any anaesthesia because the Taliban had confiscated all drugs and medical supplies from the women’s hospital. I also enjoyed that the story took place in recent times, and it was interesting to compare what my life was like growing up in comparison to the two main female characters in the same time. The scenes about how the daughter of Laila was treated had me in tears. I highly recommend this book. It really opened my eyes to the plight of women in Afghanistan.
3. The Kite Runner by Khaled Housseini. This was yet another book given to me by my Mom. I had tried to start it several times before, but really had difficulty getting sucked into the story initially. However, after I enjoyed A Thousand Splendid Suns so much, I decided to give it one last shot. This last time, the story sucked me in immediately, and gave me yet another vantage point on Afghan culture — that of a young boy and an Afghan man who moved to America. It is another heart breaking tale that ripped my eyes open to what the Taliban has done in Afghanistan and what has happened in recent history there. I am haunted by some of the characters and what happened to them. Another highly recommended read!
Just back from a weekend in Kirkwood, where I witnessed one of the most impressive storms of my life. They got almost 11 feet of snow while we were there.
We decided to head up on Thursday, as we anticipated the roads to Kirkwood getting shut down during the storm (the roads did close, and didn’t open again until yesterday afternoon). I stopped by the grocery store after work to get supplies on Thursday, and I swear the whole town of Reno was there stocking up, as I think people thought they weren’t going to be able to leave their houses during the storm. It was crazy — shelves bare, people with carts piled high, and lines 10 people deep to check out. I had to chuckle at these people (many of whom were buying cheap flashlights), knowing we were about to drive right into the storm.
The ride to Kirkwood that night wasn’t bad until about the last 20 miles. I have to admit I was a bit white knuckled at that point, but JB was confident and assured, and hence why he was driving.
The ski lifts were shut down on Friday, as the winds were wholly impressive. It was a full on blizzard up there. So we just lounged in the one bedroom condo, which was very enjoyable with a good book and a cozy fire. In the early evening, we decided we had to get out a bit, so we donned our ski wear and headed to the fitness center, which was about 200 yards away. We had to march through 4 feet of snow and then dig out the door of the fitness center, which was frozen shut, but we managed to get it open. By the time we left about an hour later, the door was buried shut again and our tracks were filled in.
We had planned on putting Little Miss in daycare so that we could each enjoy the epic conditions together, but the daycare was shut down due to the storm. Practically everything was. But we each managed to get in a half day on Saturday and Sunday in truly epic conditions.
I have to say that I absolutely LOVE my new powder skis — the Salomon 1080 Guns. After injuring myself (ironically at Kirkwood) six years ago in the powder, I have had major issues skiing in powder. But with my Guns on, the fear subsided and I really enjoyed myself, and even went seeking the deeper, steeper snow.
On Saturday, only two of the lower lifts were running, but I noticed that people were lining up at my favorite lift, Cornice Express (expert terrain). I skied on over, and was one of the first in line. The ski patrol announced they were about to open the lift, and I couldn’t believe my luck at getting fresh tracks on this chair. Next thing I knew, all ski line ettiquette was broken, and people started pushing their way up to the front of the line. I held my ground, but turned to the guy next to me and said, “I’ve never seen people bum rush a chair before.”
He responded, “then you’ve never been here on a storm day!”
Everyone was cheering, and we were all excited… And then we waited. And waited. And this was in the middle of a blizzard, mind you, so it was REALLY cold standing still like that. After 30 minutes, we were told they changed their mind, and couldn’t open the chair due to high winds. Oh well. I almost made epic tracks that day.
It was really hard coming back last night, since two half days only wet our appetite for the pow-pow. But we were responsible adults, and got our tushes back into our cubicles this morning. (By the way, we have about 2 feet of snow at our house!)
Did you hear there is another storm hitting this week? My mind is already back on the slopes, where I’ll be this weekend. Mental note… Need to find a babysitter…
